Jim Beam | 80p
A marvelous, if overlooked, Whiskey. The nose is complex and mercurial with lemon zest, caraway, mint and lavender. The flavor continues with sumptuous rye battling it out with dark, stone fruit. A sheer pleasure and, at its best, neat.
Old Overholt | 80p
Originally a 19th century Pennsylvania Rye, Old Overholt has been made for some years by the Beam distilleries and has become a lighter style rye popular with former Canadian whiskey drinkers.
Wild Turkey Rye | 101p
The 'quintessential' rye whiskey, as cocky and flamboyant as ever, explodes with delectable juicy spice. This is a delicious and criminally underrated whiskey.
Russell's Reserve Rye | 90p
Released last year, this is a more refined version of the classic. Seeing a few more years in the wood has matured the rough, rich flavors of the original. No water or ice is necessary, just a glass.
(Ri)1 | 92p
A brand new offering from the Beam people at a slightly higher proof and in a very different style from their standard rye. It has a pronounced fullness and excellent spice on the mid-palate. It can stand up to a little water, but works just fine on its own.
Sazerac | 90p
This extremely allocated, small production whiskey intrigues with dried peach, nutmeg and spice on the nose and intense flavors that seem to finish forever. If one needs a reminder of what American genius tastes like, look no further.
Jack Daniels Old No. 7 | 80p
Chewy, oily, smoky, sweet and fat - no it's not a brisket, it's Jack Daniels. Behind the myth there is still terrific whiskey which, while it stands up to Coca-Cola, ought to be tasted neat or with a splash of branch water. Not for everybody, but always a good time.
George Dickel No. 12 | 90p
The nose is almost like a cognac with lilac and freesia, but comes alive with tremendousdepth and length and a finish that is simply astonishing. One of America's greatest whiskies is back with a swagger.
George Dickel Barrel Select | 86p
This is a gentler version of the original with rich caramel in conversation with the sooty oak as the ripe stone fruit looks on. A good bottling which promises to only get better. Must be drunk neat to appreciate its subtle nuances.
Jack Daniels Single Barrel | 90p
Majestic spice rubbing elbows with sooty liquorice and occasional caramel with a notable increase in intensity from the extra proof. Now, if they would only release an Old No. 7 at 100 proof.
Ancient Age | 80p
One of the most traditional of all Kentucky bourbons, this whiskey's smooth style and discreet spice will win it many new converts. A great introduction to the pleasures of thebluegrass state.
Buffalo Trace | 90p
This flagship bourbon from the distillery of the same name possesses huge, chewy flavors of tangerine, tobacco and caraway. If your friend trots out the old cliche about bourbon being too sweet, he simply must try a glass of this.
Maker's Mark | 90p
The old standby, the whiskey that lures many people into bourbon in the first place continues to improve. The fruitcake is still there but now the whiskey seems a little drier than it was, perhaps a little wiser, certainly a little more oily and just a bit richer. Now, if we can just get people to leave the ice out of the glass.
Eagle Rare Single Barrel | 90p
A gorgeous whiskey that seems to get everything right without really trying. It seems to get better every year, and shows just how good the whiskies are from Buffalo Trace.
Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon | 93p
The first single-barrel bourbon released since prohibition is the work of former distiller Elmer T. Lee. It is a quietly intense treat of spice, orange marmalade and pecan pie. Being a single-barrel, the flavors will shift from case to case, but is always a charmer and a consummate expression of the art of distillation.
Ardbeg 10yr | 86p
One of the world's most distinctive and most delicious whiskies. The peat is everywhere, mixing with sea salt, kumquats, lemon and a whisper of butterscotch. Add just a few drops of water, sit back and enjoy.
Laphroaig 10yr | 86p
Sea brine, band-aid, mouthwash - these are the tasting notes and they are meant as a compliment. This wonderful whiskey engenders the medicinality with just the right touch of creamy sweetness and overtones of crisp barley. It was a bit quieter for a few years but thankfully, seems to be back to its old mischief.
Caol Ila 12yr | 86p
Amore subdues smokiness here with salt and olive oil in the nose, an assertive finish of pepper juniper and a hint of caramel. A good introduction to the Islay style and a great companion for a winter night.
Dalmore 12yr | 80p
One of the great whiskies of the northern highlands whose distinctive nose opens with ripe fruit, dates and orange marmalade; they continue on in the complex palate accompanied by barley and brawny malt. The finish begins copious amounts of caramel, but then the supporting flavors take their turn and leave you shaking your head in admiration.
Balvenie Doublewood 12yr | 80p
Aged first in old bourbon barrels then briefly in sherry butts, this whiskey has become quite fashionable of late and remains very accessible with strong oloroso and orange zest on the nose - nuts and heather on the palate.
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban | 92p
There is more than brand new packaging and a name change going on at Gelnmorangie; the makeover thankfully extends to the bottle's contents. The idea of taking one of Scotch whisky's most complex noses and subjecting it to aging in port pipes seemed like a losing proposition which the initial releases of the port finish confirmed all too wellthe whiskey was drowned by sweet sticky fruit and never got off the ground. Here, by contrast, the fruit throws into relief all the myriad notes in the nose: heather, oak, gooseberry and malt. There are wagons full of spice and fruit but the oak, like a good conductor, keeps every section in rhythm and balance.
Glenlivet Nadurra 16yr | 119p
full-bodied uncut, unfiltered entry of 16 years from Glenlivet with an intense nose of citrus and aniseed, a spellbinding mid-palate of demerara and ginger-soaked chocolate and a rich, oily finish of Seville orange.
Glenfiddich 15yr Solera Reserve | 80p
Not only the classiest of Glenfiddich's whiskies, but also one of the most delightful and consistently delicious whiskies in Speyside. A lovely interplay of barley, stone and citrus fruits with a hint of spice and a finish as long and soothing as a Mahler Adagio.
Balvenie Portwood 21yr | 80p
On the nose, port pokes its head out of the malt and brings you inside where praline and raisin continue an animated conversation with aniseed and malt. A delicate, attenuated whiskey that, amid all the grape tones and complexity of the malt, keeps everything on point.
Glenlivet XXV | 86p
A veritable feast for the senses with a seductive nose of oloroso and cigar box, a palate of sneaky spice with tropical fruit and bitter orange.
Don Julio Blanco | 80p
Clear and crisp agave aromas with high notes of lemon and lime citrus. This fine tequila was given a "classic" rating by Paul Pacult in Wine Enthusiasts' review of the top spirits of 2007.
Don Julio Reposado | 80p
This straw colored tequila exhibits a mellow lemon citrus nuance embellished with layers of stone fruit, cinnamon spice and pear.
Don Julio Aneso | 80p
The aging process takes place over 18 months in American oak barrels allowing the development of a rich and full-bodied tequila with bright cherry, strawberry and wild honey notes with an oaky butterscotch finish.
Don Julio 1942 | 80p
This is the standard bearer of Don Julio craftsmanship. This is a luxurious tequila aged two and a half years attaining a brilliant golden hue and rich, sweet aromas of carmel and toffee. The harmonious notes of cherry, almond, cinnamon and oak will tantalize the palate of the aficionado.
Herradura | 80p
From the land of Amatitan, the home of outlaw El Chino Cordova who shoed his horses backwards to confuse pursuing soldiers, comes this tequila blanco with a rating of four stars from Wine Enthusiast.
Corzo | 80p
Clear and crisp, this light-bodied tequila shows the brillliant attributes of 100% highland blue agave with notes of ripe tropical fruit and black pepper.
